After the announcement of the IOC, there will be 18 categories in wrestling at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Of which six men will have freestyle, six women’s freestyle and six Greco-Roman events. 16 wrestlers will be participating in every category. According to this, a total of 288 wrestlers can participate in the Tokyo Olympics. In comparison, 344 wrestlers participated in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

The IOC’s decision could cause a shock to India’s hopes. Wrestling in the Olympics is an event in which India has so far won five medals, the highest since hockey. From last three Olympic Games, Indian wrestlers are getting medal each time in wrestling. And in this regard, India also has Meddles expectations in Tokyo.

IOC has added two new events in the Tokyo Olympics, including ‘3 on 3 basketball’ and ‘freestyle cycling’. In spite of the inclusion of these games, wrestling has been reduced to 56 participants. There are a total of 10,626 athletes expected to participate in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. A total of 10,500 athletes took part in Rio Olympics 2016.
