It is a matter of football game that the Indian team has become habituated to watch us out of the top 100 teams. But now it is not so. The Indian football team has achieved its best ranking of two decades and has reached number 96. In the latest rankings released by FIFA, the Indian team has jumped four places to reach 96th, which is its best and overall second best ranking since 1996. Earlier, the Indian team had secured the 94th rank in February 1996, which is by far the best performance, apart from that, it reached 99th in November 1993. In the ranking of Asian teams, India is at number 12.
This bounce in the Indian team rankings came from the good performance in international matches in June. India beat Nepal 2-0 in the last month and defeated Kyrgyzstan 1-0 in the FC Asian Cup qualifier group match.
The Indian team has climbed up 77 points in the last two years. The team has won 13 of their last 15 matches and is unbeatable in the last 8 games (including an unofficial match against Bhutan). In February 2015, when Stephen Constantine became the coach of the Indian football team then India’s FIFA ranking was 171, which went up 173 a month later.
AIFF President Praful Patel on this success of the team said, “This is a long leap in Indian football. Two years ago we were at 173 and are now on our second best ranking.
